Wanting to make a fresh start at the beginning of the New Year is quite natural, especially after the over-indulgences of the Christmas festivities. It is also a traditional time to assess personal goals, make New Year resolutions and take steps towards becoming a fitter, healthier and happier you!

Trying to make dramatic changes in established patterns often backfires so it is better to be realistic about what it is possible to achieve. It is important to set oneself achievable goals, whether it is losing weight or giving up smoking, then think about how you can ‘work with yourself’ to make sure that you have the satisfaction of reaching your target at the end.

Good health is vital to our sense of well-being as a whole. What better time than New Year to restore your energy by cleansing your system? Not only will you feel better and enjoy greater vitality … you will also look better. Clear skin, shining eyes and glossy hair, combined with a trimmer figure, are all benefits of detoxing. Mentally you will feel sharper. As the body becomes clearer and cleaner, so the mind gains in clarity. Detoxing is also good for the emotions: clearing blockages caused by toxins in the body releases creative energy and can help lift debilitating factors like depression. Furthermore, detoxification is also a crucial element in preventing premature ageing and can be helpful in discouraging the onset of degenerative diseases.

Practically speaking, detoxification is the deep cleansing of our body to help it eliminate any waste products or poisons. Detoxing has been used for centuries to cleanse the body as a part of natural healing. It helps eliminate old cells in favour of new ones, clears out waste in the body and strengthens the immune system. Today, with the increase of toxins in our food and environment, it is more necessary than ever to detoxify at least a couple of times a year to achieve optimum energy and health.

Obviously diet and exercise play a major part in any detox process, but the judicious use of herbs and essential oils can facilitate and accelerate this purification. My recommended massage oil blend for helping to facilitate this transformation is my specially formulated ‘Purity: Detox Body Oil’, which is best applied directly after a hot bath or shower. The top ten essential oils to use alongside for detoxification are lemon, grapefruit, juniper, sweet fennel, rosemary, tea tree, celery seed, carrot seed, geranium and peppermint. In my next blog I will be exploring more specifically how each of these oils can be used.
