With our skin exposed to the sun & the elements during the summer months, here are some tips on how to care for different types of complexion & help to continue to look our best in the coming months. Remember to keep all essential oil blends well away from the eyes and use essential oils in low dilutions on the face: e.g. 3-4 drops of essential oil to 10ml carrier oil.

Sun Damaged / Dry & Mature Skin: Frankincense, rose and lavender are fantastic oils for dry, mature or sun damaged complexions as they are all healing, soothing and rejuvenating for the skin. Combine these with a vegetable oil, such as avocado, borage, rosehip seed or carrot oil (or ideally a combination of these) which are rich in vitamins, antioxidants and essential fatty acids, to radically revitalize & nourish the tissues from deep within. These nourishing carrier oils can be applied direct to the skin or blended with a few drops of essential oil in a low dilution (see guidelines above). Always massage the face using upward and outward strokes and avoid dragging on the skin. Rosewater is the classic toner /cleaner for dry and mature skin.

Combination Skin: Certain essential oils such as geranium or palmarosa are especially beneficial for balancing the sebum balance of the skin, especially when combined with a carrier oil, such as jojoba in a low dilution. The fact that many plant-based oils are similar in make-up to the skin's own sebum, enables them to support & assist the skin's natural functions & help to balance its condition from within. Geranium water also makes an ideal toner/cleanser for this skin type.

Oily Skin: Despite their common name, essential oils are not oily! Most essential oils actually vaporize rapidly leaving no residue and are absorbed readily when applied externally. Essential oils are soluble in the natural lipids present in the skin, which makes them very compatible with its cellular structure and are thus able to activate change from deep within. In fact, oils such tea tree, fragonia and cypress as are very valuable for treating oily or blemished skin conditions when combined with a carrier oil such as light coconut oil (in a low dilution) as they can help balance the sebum levels in the skin & tighten the pores as well as acting as natural anti-septics & help counter infection, as in the case of acne. Lavender or neroli flower water makes an effective & healing toner / cleanser for oily skin.
